This is the chance to invite along that special someone in your life, and share your practice as a couple. As you move through the class, we will play with standing and seated yoga poses as well as some hands on partner Thai massage techniques that will leave you both feeling relaxed and connected.

... but mostly we are gonna have FUN and giggles.

ABOUT Michael Jay

Michael was the owner of Open Space Yoga for over 13 years—a multi-award winning community studio in South Delta. He sold the studio 4 years ago to pursue his current career as a yoga business coach, and now virtual yoga teacher.

Michael's teaching style has always been about creating community and connection. He teaches in a light-hearted and fun way that makes yoga accessible for all ages and abilities.

In 2020 with the pandemic, like many teachers, he pivoted to teaching on virtual platforms and learned that he LOVED it. Being a life-long tech geek, marketing guy, yoga teacher, and yoga business coach, virtual teaching blends all of his worlds together.

Michael found that it is possible to teach online in a very interactive way, and still be able to create a Community vibe between participants. You are not going to get a follow me YouTube video experience in Michael's classes. He watches you and gives you feedback just like he did when he taught at a yoga studio.

Michael is a Mindbody Business Consultant and is a leader in the wellness industry on virtual teaching. He leads worldwide Business of Yoga webinars on How To Teach Online and Build Community for companies such Mindbody Online, Fitgrid, Teamup and The Yoga Alliance  and has been featured as a guest on business podcasts, blogs and webinars.

HEAR FROM MY STUDENTS:

Michael is one very special yoga teacher. First of all, he makes his students laugh in his class. I had never gone to a yoga class that is filled with as much fun and laughter until I met Michael. He tailors his class to fit students of all levels and he makes the extra effort to learn each student's name. I may have been to his classes weekly for a while, but he never fails to make them engaging and fun by switching things up and trying new things.  He knows when to let me take it easy and when to kick my butt. I don't think you will ever meet another yoga instructor who is as personable, fun and dedicated as Michael. Michael is a true inspiration to any yogis. If you need a reason to go to a yoga class, he's it.

Michael Jay’s yoga teaching brought me back to a regular practice after a pause of nearly 20 years. I registered for Yoga 101, unsure if I could even do yoga anymore. When I first stepped into the yoga studio, he made me feel so comfortable and at ease that I I had chosen the right person to help me restart my practice.

Michael has a unique way of building a yoga community filled with peace, joy, and fun where everyone is welcome to practice yoga in their very own way.

While yoga does wonders for body, mind and soul, it is really about learning how to accomplish what might be an uncomfortable position.  Michael teaches how to tweak that pose so it works for your own body, and he does it with such humour and encouragement that you’re smiling both outside and in.
     - Sandie D.

Michael's classes are powerful, playful and heartfelt with a lot of fun included. As someone new to yoga, it keeps me engaged and involved, allows me to grow at my own pace. Best yoga classes ever!
     - Katherine W.

Michael taught my very first yoga class and I have been attending his classes ever since. I remember being nervous and unsure of my abilities but his first words put my mind to rest. He pointed to a sign on the front wall that simply said “BREATHE” and followed with the words “this is the most important lesson to be learned today". That was 2005 and those words have stayed with me throughout the years whether I’ve been facing challenges on the yoga mat or in life. Not only has Michael’s non-judgmental approach to yoga helped me physically with enhancing my balance, flexibility and strength but at times the poses and meditation in class have also provided a safe place for me to face many of life’s struggles.

Today yoga is a part of my daily life and will always be. I am forever grateful to Michael for his teachings and those simple words to “Just Breathe”.

Namaste.
     - Lindsay Y.

I have been coming to Michael's yoga  classes for many many years. He has taught me to be calm and to enjoy so much more than I have ever taken to time to do before. He has guided me through classes cancer surgeries and helped me with encouragement to stay calm and grounded.  He made his classes my "happy, safe place".

He is informative about the various yoga positions as well as keeping a watch on what some students should not do as well as encouraging you to do as much as you can. The classes are fun and strong. I will continue to come for many more years!

Upon moving to this community in 2005 I endeavored to make some connections and to revisit my love for music. I joined a community choir which I thoroughly enjoyed. I quickly discovered how my  stooped posture and shallow breathing was limiting my ability to sing. I asked one of my choir friends if there was a yoga studio that she could recommend nearby. With great enthusiasm She directed me to open space  yoga , which is the studio that she also attended. I started going to classes at Open Space Yoga in 2006 having not done yoga for 30 years. Michael greeted me warmly and explained the calendar to me and directed me to the classes that would best suit my needs. he offered several appealing options for payment as well. His calendar was easy to understand and it caught my interest immediately.

This beautiful practice has been life altering for me. I have learned to breath more easily and more fully.my friends I’ve commented how much color changed from being gray to a wonderful healthy vibrancy. Through this mindful practice I have developed a greater understanding of how my mind body and soul work in unison. Not only have my health and my posture improved but I am now singing solo pieces with a jazz ensemble.

My yoga practice at Open Space Yoga has been life changing for me and I have made lifelong friends here at the yoga studio. Michael has created a safe space for us all to come together in community.

We’ve been going to Michael’s Hatha Flow classes for several years and they’re always enjoyable and inspiring. As well as the usual flow poses, he includes a few more challenging elements and though we may groan a little, our strength, endurance and flexibility has steadily increased. He offers options to poses and walks among us to gently help correct positioning. Michael’s classes are a highlight of our week!

Michael is a great yoga teacher, who actually takes time, in his classes, to teach.   I don’t just mean that Michael gives good alignment cues and good adjustments (he does); I mean that he takes the time to actually teach us how to get into a pose, and how to build up to it, and he offers advice to correct the mistakes that so many of us make without knowing (eg. falling into our hip joints in balance poses).  That’s pretty unique in my experience with different yoga teachers, and at different yoga studios.  Even more uniquely, Michael brings a sense of joyful community to his classes.  Laughter in class is frequent, and encouraged.  I truly love that!

I would like to share my deepest thanks to Michael Jay's Core Yoga class.. I recently had my left hip replacement surgery on February 26,2019,. Prior to the surgery, I attended the Core Yoga class regularly for more than a year. Some of the days weren't much fun as my range of motion was obviously diminished in my hip.

Surgery occurred at Richmond General and was successful. Just a few hours after surgery, I was required to take part in some post-operation exercises. The physiotherapist noticed and commented on my ability to perform the exercises at a level that excessed expectations. I attributed my success to the Core Yoga classes I had been taking.

The benefits from the Core Yoga class significantly improved my efforts during rehabilitation. I was able to complete my rehab faster this time around (l had my right hip replaced in 2017 and rehab took longer because I wasn't aware of the class yet). The majority of the exercises in rehab focused on core activation which I was obviously ready for with the help of the Core Yoga classes.

A few months after the operation and rehabilitation, I returned to Michael Jay's class to continue my progress.

I have noticed many benefits such as increased strength, flexibility and general body movement. All of these factors have added to an improvement in my golf game as well. My only regret is that I didn't start sooner.

I would strongly recommend attending Michael Jay’s Core Yoga class for individuals who are in need of hip or any other type of surgery (pre and post procedure) and anyone looking to improve their overall body health, movements and flexibility.
